La Chiesa di Sant’Antonino è una delle chiese più affascinanti di Valguarnera. La chiesa risale al 1666, come testimoniato dall’atto di morte del 27 giugno di quell’anno, che documenta già la sua esistenza. Nel 1783, fu fondata la confraternita di Maria SS. della Mercede, un gruppo di devoti operai e civili, che contribuì al suo sviluppo spirituale e culturale. Questa confraternita conobbe un periodo di grande prosperità fino al 1820, per poi declinare e trasformarsi nel 1842 nella confraternita di San Antonio di Padova.
Nel 1877, un’importante ristrutturazione della chiesa portò alla costruzione della caratteristica scala esterna a due rampe, a causa del cambiamento del livello della strada. Questo intervento evidenziò l’adattabilità della chiesa alle trasformazioni urbanistiche del paese.
L’interno della Chiesa di Sant’Antonino è caratterizzato dalla sua struttura a due navate, una peculiarità che non si trova in molte chiese siciliane. Le due navate conferiscono all’ambiente un’atmosfera intima e raccolta, con un delicato gioco di luci e ombre che arricchisce la spiritualità del luogo. La chiesa conserva diversi elementi d’arte sacra e, sebbene meno imponente rispetto ad altre chiese del paese, è un punto di riferimento religioso di grande significato per la comunità.
The Church of Sant’Antonino is one of the most fascinating churches in Valguarnera. The church dates back to 1666, as evidenced by the death certificate of June 27 of that year, which documents its existence. In 1783, the confraternity of Maria SS. della Mercede was founded, a group of devoted workers and civilians who contributed to its spiritual and cultural development. This confraternity enjoyed a period of great prosperity until 1820, before declining and transforming in 1842 into the confraternity of Saint Anthony of Padua.
In 1877, a significant restoration of the church led to the construction of the characteristic two-flight external staircase, due to changes in the level of the street. This intervention highlighted the church’s adaptability to the urban transformations of the town.
The interior of the Church of Sant’Antonino is characterized by its two-nave structure, a feature not found in many Sicilian churches. The two aisles create an intimate and enclosed atmosphere, with a delicate interplay of light and shadow that enhances the spirituality of the place. The church holds several sacred art pieces and, though less imposing than other churches in the town, is a religious landmark of great significance for the community.
